We are happy to announce the International Workshop on the Integration of Genomic and Geographic Information System data for wildlife conservation (WIGGIS) organized by Life CLAW project.
Piacenza (PC, Italy) 15-16 September 2022
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become increasingly popular in molecular ecology and wildlife conservation studies due to their capability to overlay genetic information with environmental data, allowing the investigation of species distribution, gene-environment associations, and the genetic basis of adaptation to particular geographic or climatic conditions.
The WIGGIS workshop will highlight relevant new research on GIS and genomic data integrated modelling and will feature invited speakers, and oral and poster presentations by the attendees.
We are looking forward to meeting you in Piacenza.

Speakers
Stéphane Joost
Dr. Stéphane Joost is a geographer, GIScientist, Maître d’Enseignement et de Recherche (MER) at the Laboratory of Geographic Information Systems (LASIG) at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) where he leads a group of landscape genetics. He participated in the pioneering works leading to the advent of landscape genomics. His expertise in this research field was consolidated through a substantial number of featured works that described local adaptation in different organisms, for instance cattle, goat, sheep, insects, plants and coral species. Dr Joost contributed to the characterization of good practices in landscape genomics, and he is currently investigating the role of geospatial & genomic resolutions in the context of multiscale approaches to identify the scale on which natural selection operates.

Elia Vajana
Elia Vajana is a postdoc at the Institute of Biosciences and Bioresources of the Italian National Research Council. Biologist, he graduated in Ecology at the University of Parma, and gained his Ph.D at the Catholic University in Piacenza, Italy, where he focused on the usage of population and landscape genomics to detect natural selection in the domestics. He then moved to the Laboratory of Geographic information systems at EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland), where he deepened the usage of spatial analysis to understand the evolutionary response to divergent selection at the intraspecifc level. Currently, his research activity spans from the study of the evolutionary ecology of forest trees to the development of conservation strategies aimed to mitigate the effect of climate change on forests.

Oliver Selmoni
Dr Oliver Selmoni is a postdoc at the Carnegie Institution for Science (USA), co-hosted at Cleves lab (based in Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore) and Moi lab (based in Stanford University). Graduated in bioinformatics at the University of Lausanne, Selmoni joined EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland) in 2016 for a PhD thesis focusing on the use of environmental genomics to investigate coral reef adaptation to the warming ocean. This approach was developed in collaboration with the French Institute of Research for Development, and is now being extended to support coral reef conservation around the world, such as in New Caledonia, Japan, Australia, Mauritius, Seychelles, French Antilles and the Red Sea.

Marco Andrello
The research activities of Dr Marco Andrello stem from the disciplinary fields of population biology and biological conservation. His main line of research focuses on connectivity in the marine environment. He has worked on connectivity between marine protected areas and the consequences of dispersal for fisheries management and population genetics. Another line of research deals with the dynamics of mountain plant populations in relation to land management activities and climate. The methodologies used are mainly mathematical modeling (demographic, biophysical and demo-genetic models) and statistical analysis of ecological and population genetic data.
